Description

When I was 12 years old, SN1987A captured my imagination.  I remember reading about it in a science magazine in my middle school library and being enthralled by something new appearing in the night sky.  It was like our own SN1054.  Little did I know how often stars went supernova within the reach of telescopes here on Earth.

On May 19th, Koichi Itagaki discovered a new supernova in M101, near NGC 5461.  It grew in brightness over the weekend, and is now quite bright even with a small refractor.

I quickly captured this target last night, between clouds and two other targets.  I have only 30 minutes in each of R, G and B so I will be trying to capture more this week as clouds permit.  However, I was quite impressed with how this came out (and with the quick post-processing job before work this morning).

Enjoy.
